Naomi Fisher is a young Amish woman living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. When her mother is killed by an Englisher, Naomi must take over full-time care of her seven siblings, one of which is a small baby. Her father operates a general store which she is also expected to help run. With so many responsibilities, Naomi has no time to think about being courted or eventually marrying. Life falls into a predictable pattern of cooking, cleaning, and shopkeeping until one fateful day when Naomi's baby brother turns up missing from their yard. Deemed negligent by her father, Naomi begins considering leaving home in search of acceptance elsewhere. Will her father ever forgive her, and will Naomi ever forgive herself for neglecting her duties?

Caleb Hoffmeir is a young buggy maker with his eye on Naomi Fisher. He would love to possibly marry her someday. But Naomi's father refuses to allow Caleb to court her, citing his need for Naomi's help at home as the reason. Caleb decides to wait until the waters calm again before making another attempt to persuade him to allow the courting. Will Caleb ever be given permission to court Naomi, or will he eventually give up? Will he ever win the hand of THE STOREKEEPER'S DAUGHTER?

Wanda Brunstetter offers us a glimpse into Amish society with the first in a new series entitled Daughters of Lancaster County. THE STOREKEEPER'S DAUGHTER is a fascinating journey into the life of a large Amish family dealing with many of the same struggles as the rest of the world. The middle-aged father himself must try to cope with raising eight children by himself after his wife is killed in a car accident, and then his baby son disappears right out of his yard. His oldest daughter is begging to go courting at a time when he must rely on her to care for his other children and help hold the family together. Each must seek the other's forgiveness, along with the forgiveness of their Heavenly Father. This is a story of which I eagerly await the second and third parts of. Highly recommended to readers who enjoy sweet romances.
