The Space Between by Rhonda Sholar

Know the Gender, Know the Difference

Tweens are just discovering the opposite sex, and while it's the time for many of them to develop crushes, they also want their identities to be completely separate.

Publishers are recognizing it, and developing separate titles for guys and girls.

The January release A Young Woman's Walk With God by Elizabeth George (Harvest House) deal with topics you might find on any tween's blog across America - peer pressure, school activities and physical changes.

Thomas Nelson released two separate "BibleZines" for tween guys and girls. Released in March from the Nelson Bibles imprint, Blossom: The Complete New Testament for girls and Explore: The Complete New Testament, a version for boys, each retail for $16.99. The Bibles that read like today's magazines cover the topics of your body, friends, and changing relationships with your parents.

Barbour Publishing has developed two tween lines - one for girls and one with guys in mind. Boys who like C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" series will be drawn to the fantasy fiction crafted in a three-book series by R.K. Mortenson about 11-year-old boy Landon Snow.

Barbour Publishing has partnered with Realbuzz Studios for "America's first inspirational manga series," called "Serenity." Developed for tweens and teen girls, "Serenity" uses expressive cartoons to tell the story of a lonely girl from a broken home who wants to be accepted. Barbour is to add three series next year.
