Manga is a huge business, and it's encouraging to see someone take advantage of the art form with a Christian message in mind. The Serenity series is swiftly becoming a big hit, outselling other current manga bestsellers by almost three times. Apparently, it's achieving crossover appeal, as well, selling beyond the traditional Christian bookstores. That's encouraging, as it shows what Christians can do with various forms of media when they focus on putting out a quality product. With Buzz Dixon (did I mention he did G.I. Joe in the 80's?) at the helm, and Min Kwon on art chores, Serenity is that quality product.
(For those of you using search engines: no, this has nothing to do with the sci-fi Serenity. Sorry.)
This second volume of Serenity's adventures involves the young anti-hero actually beginning to attend the school's Prayer Club, though not entirely by her own choice. While occasionally trying to do the right thing, an accident with someone else's car leads Serenity to have to make serious decisions about responsibility, while the Prayer Club members wrestle with the issue of unconditional love.
The art is already improving from the first book. The usually minimalist backgrounds occasionally make way for some truly beautiful pieces, such as the watercolor-style image of Serenity's first attempt at a real prayer.
While the plots are somewhat simplistic, no one can deny that this series is a hit. It's hitting the right buttons and appealing to its target audience quite well. One can only hope that it continues to grow and improve. Recommended.
