Clearly, he doesn't tackle any of these in depth, yet each item links with others to create a richly textured understanding of Bible times, peoples, and places and how they impact us today.

To his credit, Miller doesn't avoid sensitive topics, He cites opposing theories regarding creation, hell, and even the virgin birth. The final page in the book, while not exactly a happy ending, explains why the concept of hell is such a challenge for Bible experts. Miller leaves it up to readers to determine whether it's a real place with real fire, complete annihilation of the unrepentant, or a short-term punishment resulting eventually in complete reconciliation with God.
