Excerpt:"'I want to apologize for my behavior on Monday.' The words gushed out like a boiling pot overflowing the brim. 'I understand how you couldn't possibly trust me.' She sucked in a breath, then added, 'When I've never given you a reason to think I'm trustworthy.'
The imposing silence shattered what little poise she had remaining.
'I've given up on taking Rebecca back to Cleveland. She belongs here with you. I can see that now.' She willed her heart to cease its incessant pounding.
Grant pointed toward the east, where shades of purple, pink, and orange slowly spread across the horizon. 'Would you look at that? Absolutely beautiful. I was awake most of the night pacing the floor of my room with too many matters on my mind. I talked, and God listened. Everything looked black. And when I went to my window, there wasn't even a star in the sky. Here is the beginning of a new day, and it nearly takes my breath away.' He turned toward her and reached for her hand. 'Thank you, Jenny. I believe it's going to be a grand day.'
Confused to the point she might not recognize her own name, Jenny allowed him to take her arm and walk back inside the house. What a strange response to her confession. Of course, she'd been confused since the day she met him."
Synopsis:
Jenny Martin arrives in the small Texan town of Kahlerville from Cleveland. After such a long and arduous trip, combined with the stifling heat, she is quite ill and is taken to the home of the town's doctor. After she recovers she moves to a boarding house and the mysterious man who seems to know her from the train also stays there.
She has come to bring back her two-year-old niece, daughter of her deceased sister who was a whore – father unknown. The child has been adopted by the doctor and with a housekeepers help, they are a happy household.
There is an understandable strain between Jenny and Grant, the doctor. Further strain between them is caused by her not being a Christian (her parents raised her that way) and his having found God. Yet, they manage to be polite and – in time – Jenny sees that the child is better off with Grant, who adores her, than if she took her home to the house she shares with her parents.
The man who has followed her by train from Cleveland, whom she doesn't know, creates trouble by insisting that they traveled together and know one another. Come to find out that he was close to her sister for years, though. Why the lies? What does he want? Serious trouble develops – a few deaths, a fire. As Jenny becomes attached to the town and its people, tension mounts from more than one direction.
Review:
Forget the heavy-handed religious talk, if you want, because the story is truly an exciting one. You can’t help but find this a thrilling and well-told story from start to finish. There is some deep drama here and violence – as well as many references about finding God. It’s powerful and makes you want to read more by this author.
