Ten-year-old Rosa is part of a family of Mexican immigrants struggling to survive in Texas during the Dust Bowl years. Told in simple language, with great attention to historical detail, the tale is driven by the strengths of its main character who dreams of a better life through hard work and education.

Rosa achieves goals such as winning an essay contest about "Why I Love America" and learning as much as she can with the help of a former teacher who tutors her. Meanwhile, drought and deadly dust storms threaten to destroy all her family has fought so hard to build.

While young readers will enjoy this novel and become involved in Rosa's quest, older readers will also find it poignant and moving, thanks to skillful writing and the depiction of loving family relationships challenged by a difficult time in our nation's history.

The book includes a helpful glossary of Spanish words used in the text, and is part of Barbour's "Sisters in Time" series.
