Why Did Peter Pray on the Roof?(And Other Things That Make You Go Hmm…)
New Book Explores Customs and Curiosities from the Bible
Why did people wake up so early in the morning in Bible times? What exactly is a weaning feast? And what is the significance of the number seven in Revelation? For in-depth answers to these and more Bible-related questions you may have wondered about but never asked, consider The Illustrated Guide to Bible Customs and Curiosities (Barbour Publishing, May) by George W. Knight.
Featuring more than 750 entries, The Illustrated Guide to Bible Customs and Curiosities is designed to appeal to the layperson by helping make the Bible more relevant and understandable. Beginning in Genesis and journeying through to Revelation, Barbour’s newest reference book offers readers insight and background information on customs and events from biblical times as well as explanations of word meanings and phrases used by the biblical writers. Entries include a related scripture verse or passage and touch on topics such as:
Why were city gates so popular? (Genesis 19:1)
How did a door lock work in biblical times?
(Judges 3:23–25)
What human characteristics are assigned to God? (Isaiah 59:1)
Why did the Babylonians worship their weapons? (Habakkuk 1:16)
What role does salt play in the Bible? (Matthew 5:13)
What does John mean when he writes of the “bowels of compassion”? (I John 3:17)
What is a love feast? (Jude 12)
To enhance the reader’s experience, the book weaves full-color photographs and illustrations throughout the text and includes reference tools such as a scriptural index and a topical index.
