It's All Greek to Me!New Bible Commentary Series Opens Up Scripture to Laypeople
For many people, serious study of the Bible can be a daunting undertaking. But seeing the Bible from an historical and cultural perspective, as well as understanding the original meanings of biblical words, adds to a richer Bible-reading experience. Now, Christians of all ages and backgrounds can study with greater ease with the QuickNotes Simplified Bible Commentary Series, which begins to release in November 2007 (Barbour Publishing).
"Our goal is to give readers an academically sound commentary, but in words that are easy to understand," said Paul Muckley, senior editor for non-fiction. "This series doesn’t require readers to have a seminary degree."
Designed for both personal study and church use—for Sunday school and small group preparation, for example—the QuickNotes series will include 12 volumes, with 7 focused on the Old Testament and 5 on the New Testament. The series launches in November with Volume 8: Matthew & Mark, edited by Dr. Stephen Leston, Dr. Mark Strauss, and Dr. Ian Fair. This brand-new resource is available for the value price of $9.97.
Additional volumes include:
Volume 9: Luke–John, February 2008, Dr. Mark Strauss, Dr. Stephen Leston, and Robert Deffinbaugh
Volume 10: Acts–2 Corinthians, May 2008, Dr. Peter Barnes and Dr. Mark Strauss
Volume 11: Galatians–Philemon, August 2008
Volume 12: Hebrews–Revelation, November 2008
Volumes 1–7: Old Testament, Beginning February 2009
Each volume offers section-by-section commentary that shows readers the logical flow and theme of each Bible book, as well as the historical and literary context of the verses. QuickNotes also explains unusual customs and difficult Bible verses in each passage. For controversial sections and topics, major interpretations are presented. One unique aspect of this commentary series is the inclusion of "Take It Home" boxes at the end of each section, which offer thought-provoking questions designed to help readers apply Bible knowledge to their lives. The commentary is designed to work with any Bible translation.
