Snippet: Lena’s husband has passed away and she is having a hard time running the farm on her own. With two young sons to raise, could the answer to her prayers be in the form of a MAIL-ORDER HUSBAND? Find out in the book, NEBRASKA LEGACY, which contains four stories about men who all become husbands of convenience in the Old West in the late 1800s.

MAIL-ORDER HUSBAND

Lena Walker is a widow struggling to keep her farm running in Nebraska in 1880, while trying to raise two sons and fend off advances from repulsive neighbors who want to marry her. Unable to keep up with all the work, Lena decides to advertise for a husband in newspapers back East.

Gabriel Hunters sees the ad in his Philadelphia newspaper and decides to answer it. After all, at thirty-six years of age, he wasn’t getting any younger, and with no family or friends left to speak of, he had no ties to hold him in Philadelphia. Gabe turned to his beloved books to learn about farming methods, and deciding it couldn’t be too difficult of an undertaking, accepts Lena’s offer to come to Nebraska when she replies back to his initial letter.

Lena doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry when Gabe steps off the train. Tall and rather portly, Gabe is certainly not what Lena had pictured for her new husband, and his use of fancy words confuses her and her sons repeatedly. With the wedding scheduled for three days later, Lena wonders how she can ever marry--or ever love--such a man as Gabe. Is this the man God has sent to be her husband, or is it all a big mistake?

NEBRASKA LEGACY is a collection of four stories about men in the Old West who become husbands of convenience in the late 1800s. MAIL-ORDER HUSBAND is the first of the four, which also include TEMPORARY HUSBAND, KIOWA HUSBAND, and RENEGADE HUSBAND. All four of these stories have been released previously as Heartsong Presents titles and are now compiled into this full-length novel by DiAnn Mills. This review is based only on the first story, which is what was provided in the reader’s copy I read.

The Old West comes to life in MAIL-ORDER HUSBAND, and I appreciated the twist on the ‘mail-order bride’ scenario. Readers will experience the harsh realities of life in the west during the late 1800s as they eagerly turn page after page to see if Gabe will marry Lena or if he will be sent home to Philadelphia a rejected man. I enjoyed the award-winning MAIL-ORDER HUSBAND and I look forward to reading the rest of the stories in NEBRASKA LEGACY soon.
